The Reliquarium and Envision Festival currently partner to bring Envision attendees a visual sensation that is the centerpiece of our jungle paradise. Not only does The Reliquarium collective provide us with the most exceptionally intricate and stimulating stages, but overall they provide a sense of community that brings us past most boundaries.
The Reliquarium’s services include: metalwork, woodwork, casting, stage and environment lighting, integrated LED lighting systems, custom animations, video mapping, custom fabrication and a whole lot of creative design! Their mantra states, “[We are] a collective of artists dedicated to facilitating environments for expression of the creative spirit. We provide professional art installation, fabrication, and special event consulting services for client in both the public and private sector. Utilizing a wide range of mediums, we combine aspects from technology, nature and engineering to execute projects from conceptualization through final design and implementation, creating inspirational works of art for universal audiences.”
Their mission statement resonates passion and execution, “We of the Reliquarium offer a variety of custom works that are imbued with the forces of life and death in reverence to the power of the natural world. It is most gratifying to create personalized wearable effigies of the earth and encourage you to reach out to us with unique requests for individual wear. Designed and crafted with the utmost intention to materials and the stories they tell, we work with growth and decomposition as orchestrator of the ultimate process to bring dead objects back to life. These objects contain a history within them. They are relics of that story of life and death and that history is inscribed on them. The essence of the animal lives on in the relics of its life, in its skull, in its bones. We celebrate this process, drawing upon it and imbuing them with our own process. They gain more layers of growth, of history, as the wearer adorns them. The wearer grows with them and the cycle continues.”
Ivy Ross, Co-Founder and Director of Design for The Reliquarium, spoke with the Envision Family about the inspiration and groundwork of The Reliquarium.
What is the background with The Reliquarium business and crew?
Starting as a dual collaboration between partners and blossoming into a family, The Reliquarium has grown to be more than just an art business but a thriving artist community, including 12 core members and 35 collaborators, our extended roots are reaching all over the world. Our art collective is currently based out of Rhode Island, which houses our workshop, makerspace, studios and event space, where we invite artists from all over to make art and gather to celebrate our existence.
What are some creative ways you encapsulate the ideas for the stages your team builds?
We are inspired by the ideas that unite us as people and ignite a spark of inspiration for us all. Using the ancient symbols of our ancestors and delving beneath the surface of our consciousness we begin to peel back the layers of perception. Understanding each stage as an altar for celebrating life, we bring in the knowledge of our past and present to create symbols for our future.
“Art is a ritual, performed in reverence to the undying beauty and immense power that exists within the cycle of creation. The processes of life, growth, and death are infused within every facet of our being. We strive to allow such processes to guide and define our own practice. Thus, we draw from the abundant beauty of the natural world, from things many see as dead and forgotten to create relics; effigies of concepts fossilized within our cultural zeitgeist to reflect how we live and die and what it means to be here now.”
What is the work and building process involved?
The work takes many forms and shapes depending on the space(s) in which they are created and inhabit. Native to Costa Rica, our structures are built with Bamboo and clad with Plywood cutouts to create a form in which holds many facets of symbol, vision, and intention. Adding Fabric, Natural materials and Mirrors soften the visual pallet as each layer is a different material, color and texture. With the addition of mirrors we are able to integrate the viewer and the natural environment into the work and add a playful spirit to the ominous sculptures. When the sun goes down, the works come alive as projections mapped to every facet, allow for the works to ungulate and breath as the music brings you home.
What is your favorite part about the Envision x The Reliquarium partnership?
This will be the 5th year working with Envision. We have built some incredible and magikal artworks with Envision and enjoy reusing and updating our works each year. Each year the community blossoms into a vibrant family that lasts beyond the gates of the festival and creates memories vast beyond the limits of our world.
About the Founders:
The work of Logan Will is best described as fusion of life and death with a notion of time as the ultimate orchestrator of all things. I draw from the mysteries of the past; from the desiccated roots of a great first growth tree, or the corroded vertebra and skull of a deer that died winters past. Working specifically with the anatomy of what once lived, I create organic systems that mimic concepts fossilized within our cultural zeitgeist to generate questions about how we live and die and what it means to be human.
Sprung from the depths of the metropolis, Ivy Ross is influenced by the juxtaposition of natural world and the unnatural that humans create. A need for worship and appreciation of our dying natural habitats she creates works that use natural materials to show our cycle of life and death. In an altar based way of creating, every material and object is important to the experience of the work. Asking questions about sustainability and truth behind waste, works are birthed from inspiration for change.
