The afternoon is humid, the streets of San Jose are bustling, and you’re tired. The plane just landed. If you’re like many of our attendees, your first order of business upon touching down in Costa Rica is getting yourself (and your baggage) down to Envision. Thankfully there are a few great options depending on your budget and how adventurous you’re feeling.

Taxis and Public Buses
Although there are stories of hitchhiking down or joining a caravan of Envision goers, grabbing the local TRACOPA bus one common way to travel to Envision from San Jose. You can catch one from the central bus station here, and they cost around $15 each way. Rates and schedules are available on the TRACOPA website. You can’t miss the busses, they are bright pink! This is a good way to get to Rancho La Merced, but be prepared for a few challenges. You’ll need transportation to and from the bus terminals, so budget extra cash for taxis and extra time for delays. Taxis can be quite expensive in Costa Rica, so this can make the bus trip more expensive than it appears at first. Traffic in San Jose is hellacious during most of the day, so the trip from the airport to the bus station and back out of San Jose can add a few hours to your trip. The TRACOPA busses can make many, many stops to pick up and drop off local passengers who use the bus as their main means of transportation, but they will get you here, just a bit slower!

Renting A Car
If you’re feeling more adventurous and have a higher budget, renting a car might be an option, especially if you’re traveling with a larger group and have plans before or after Envision. Check out our information on rental cars here and make sure to protect yourself with collision and liability insurance. Driving in Costa Rica can be wild and the roads can be in poor condition, so drive cautiously and be prepared. If you’re bringing a car to Envision, make sure to budget for parking — which is $20 for a single entry or $40 for unlimited in-and-out.
For most attendees, the best option is the Envision Shuttle. It costs around $70, is less hassle than a bus, and way less liability than a rental car. The shuttle picks up directly from the SJO airport and travels straight to the festival grounds. Envision uses a local shuttle service called Monkey Ride which has reputable drivers who know the roads like the back of their hand. It’s a great way to meet fellow Envision goers and connect with the community before you arrive — the experience begins as soon as you leave the airport! If the shuttle sounds like a winner, you can grab your ticket here. No matter how you decide to make the journey, be safe, respect the locals, and enjoy the ride.
