When traveling to a festival in one of the most bio-diverse jungles in the world, one might wonder how the festival actually helps the surrounding communities and ecosystem while simultaneously throwing a killer party. Envision Festival continuously makes efforts to leave the land better than they found it. Between the beach communities of Playa Hermosa and Playa Guiones, over 10,000 trees have been planted with the combined efforts of Envision Festival and Costas Verdes; that’s a lot of greenery! With over 54 species of native trees being planted, the festival is taking monumental steps to regenerate the jungle that holds a special spot in the hearts of many.

The actual site of Envision Festival, Rancho La Merced, is also being loved and tended to. 175 trees have been planted on-site in the past year and more than 2,000 trees have been planted on-site since the birth of the festival a mere 8 years ago. The trees at the festival not only bring shade to attendees, but they also help bring life to the site. Monkeys and birds are often seen in the treetops of the festival, jumping and playing above the stages; it’s truly a sight to behold. What once was a dry, non-forested cattle pasture is now the home of a forested, lush site that welcomes music and nature lovers from all over the world.

Envision Festival isn’t just trying to increase the greenery, but they’re also committed to not using single-use water bottles, plates, and utensils at all. All Envision attendees bring personal reusable items for all food or drinks bought on site. There will be multiple dishwashing stations provided by the festival so that these utensils can be cleaned and utilized throughout the weekend. Envision will also be selling bamboo products for those who have managed to forget to pack their own; however, quantities are limited, so snag them once on site. If buying them isn’t feasible, be sure to visit Community Carbon Trees at the Tree Center and learn how to make banana leaf, palm leaf, and bamboo items to use throughout the festival. Not only does it help the environment, but it is a useful skill to learn for future travels.

Community Carbon Trees and Envision Festival have teamed up to amplify each other’s messages. Community Carbon Trees is a Costa Rican organization that strives to stabilize and repair damaged lands to prevent landslides, preserve local species of rare native trees and medicinal plants, to improve growth rates and carbon sequestration, and provide Costa Rican landowners with a way to earn good income off their land without engaging in destructive farming practices. Their mission statement and continued efforts to protect and enrich the native land are totally in line with the ethos of Envision and have informed and supported the festival’s efforts over the past several years. By the estimations of Community Carbon Trees, 2 tons of carbon is sequestered annually by planting and maintaining only 25 trees. These calculations reveal that Envision’s reforestation efforts have potentially offset 40 tons of carbon over the past 8 years!
