Coming to Envision Festival in Costa Rica is perhaps one of the most breathtaking experiences you can imagine, but like many of the greatest adventures in life it requires a bit of care be put into the planning to get the most out of the trip. It can be difficult to know where to start, but there are many options for traveling to Uvita, Costa Rica. Are you feeling like there’s a little more to checking this one off your bucket list? Well, if you’re like more than 75% of our attendees and you’re coming from out of the country then there’s a good reason for that, but it’s totally, absolutely, 100% worth it.
To aid your travel plans we’ve outlined all the modes of transportation you can (and will probably) use while enroute to the paradisiacal wonderland we call Envision Festival.
There are many sites that will compare costs of airline flights for the dates you are looking to travel. We recommend Skyscanner, Google Flights, Hipmunk and Hopper. Once you have arrival and departure dates, set price alerts on any of these sites and they’ll update you when fares are best. Doing this removes the stress of logging on to these flight sites every week to check the prices of flights. Another great way to save some money on flights is to fly out of larger cities with larger airports. For example, if you live in the San Luis Obispo (California), your first instinct may be to fly out of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) since it is probably the closest and most convenient, especially for international travel. However, you may find even cheaper deals for flights out of San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Keep an eye on surrounding cities and airports for your flights and set email alerts for those too. Also, make sure to follow Envision Festival’s social media accounts as flight deals from major cities are often posted to alert fans and attendees.
The recommended airport that most people will want to fly into is SJO, Juan Santamaría International Airport. The venue is a 3-hour drive from the airport and it is also where the Envision shuttle will pick you up and drop you off, if you purchase a shuttle ticket from the Envision website. Shuttles are $60, plus taxes, each way and are a great way to meet new friends while you prolong the experience. Shuttles also help you avoid rental car fees, and reduce stress.
Another option is to fly into LIR, Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport; but BE WARNED it’s not as close to the venue at 6-hours away, but occasionally they offer good fares. If you have friends in Costa Rica that you’d like to visit this may be an easy way to connect with them on your way to or from the festival.
For transportation, most people take the aforementioned Envision shuttle because it’s one of the easiest ways to get to the venue from SJO. The shuttles can take you from SJO to Dominical or from SJO to the Envision site; same applies for return shuttles. The shuttles are a safe, secure way to get you and your belongings to and from one of the best festivals ever.
There are many local taxis who are more than happy to drive you to town for food and other essentials for a small fee. So if you want to run your errands or head into town for something truly special plan to bring a little extra money for that!
Renting a car is also an option, but it’s advisable to bring a credit card as many rental car companies charge fees that are not stated online and need to be paid upfront, in person before you’re able to drive the car away. Also, driving in Costa Rica can be quite a different experience than driving in the states. Remember we are guests in this land so be kind and courteous on the road and yield the right of way to locals when you can so the memory they have of encountering Envision-goers on the road is a great one. For directions from the airport to the venue, you can either print out driving directions ahead of time or download them from an app like Google Maps onto your phone so you can easily refer them while enroute without data charges. For an even easier time with driving and directions bring someone along who speaks Spanish. Many people in Costa Rica speak English, but there are pockets between SJO and Uvita where Spanish is good to know, so if you find yourself needing help and having to ask for directions it’s nice to have someone who is fluent in Spanish with you.
Another option for Transportation is the bus. Take the TRACOPA bus from San José to Paso Canoas and get off in Uvita. The bus ride takes about 4 hours but is a very affordable way to get to the venue as the cost for the ride is around $15. Make sure you check the bus schedules ahead of time as you do not want to be without a way to or from the venue. You may also find alternate routes via the TRACOPA bus, just remember to check times, fares, and to ask for help if you are ever unsure. You will undoubtedly be surrounded by many other travelers on the same adventure as you and the locals are very kind and helpful here. The shops and experiences at the stops along the way are an authentic delight too.
The easiest thing to do when it comes to lodging is to camp on site at Envision Festival. To do this, remember that the weather is hot and humid, so a battery operated fan for your tent can be quite a comfort. Since we encourage our guests to pack minimally to keep our footprint positive in the jungle we offer many onsite accommodations that make staying at Envision easy, affordable and a whole lot more fun.
If camping on site isn’t your ideal plan, then get to Google-ing soon! Airbnb has a variety of listed rentals in and around Uvita that are extremely affordable, especially when splitting amongst friends. Benefits of renting off-site can include air conditioning, showers, and flushable toilets. Some days those showers can be a lifesaver.
Once again, local taxis are a great way to get to the venue from your hotel or Airbnb. There are also many hostels that are a favorite among travelers and locals alike, however, many of these spots get booked way ahead of time, so if you see an opening in a hostel you like, we recommend you book it before someone else does. Hostels are an affordable way to stay off site but you will need to sort out travel to and from the venue since our shuttles don’t go to local hostels this year.
