Envision Festival is rooted in deep environmental standards that grow past a simple mindset and intentionally blossom into our surrounding ecosystem; all while supporting surrounding communities, teaching greener approaches and simultaneously throwing an epic party. This year, we have been nominated for “Outstanding Green Event of 2018” at 2018 FestX Awards, and we are honored to uphold such a title and to be recognized for our environmentally conscious initiatives.
What is environmental sustainability and why is it important? Why is sustainability important for development? Envision procreates partnerships and initiatives to push sustainability efforts in the event space industry, and beyond.
Our commitment and obligation to provide serious and intentional Earth-Care to the grounds of Rancho la Merced is first and foremost. The principles of Permaculture can be felt vibrating through the entire site grounds. Environmental preservation in sustainable development is rooted in the core of our hearts. We can not do this without the greater Envision community, passion of our attendees and commitment of our team.
Between the beach communities of Playa Hermosa and Playa Guiones, over 45,000 trees have been planted with the combined efforts of Envision Festival and Costas Verdes; that’s only the beginning! Our immediate team, with the help of many more tribe members, are taking tremendous leaps towards more initiatives to regenerate the jungle, clean up the beaches and oceans, and educate our community on ways to take care of our home.
When we decided to relocate venues to Rancho La Merced on a decade long lease, our main motivation was not only minimizing our impact on the local land but to maximize the potential of the space based on Permaculture Principles. Just on the festival grounds alone, more than 3,000 trees have been planted since the birth of our festival 9 years ago. The trees not only create shade but have begun to house a house for the monkeys and birds that often appear at Envision, gliding joyfully throughout our branches we provided back to them. We have transformed a dry, sun-blasted space that couldn’t support wildlife or local flora and fauna, into our thriving jungle-beach paradise for environmental lovers all over the world. This is just the beginning.
Our 2019 initiatives encapture community, opportunity, and love for the outlook of a cleaner earth. Intertwining more aspects of Costa Verdes into our initiatives and launching The Wave Brigade, we will have more and more sustainable elements scattered throughout our site.
All of our environmental aspects will flourish with opportunities to gain knowledge and help to raise awareness of what is so very close to our hearts, Planet Earth. This includes in-depth permaculture retreats, herbal first aid clinics, numerous workshops reaping the healthy benefits of the land at our hands and tours to take time to sit, explore and breath in the beauty of Costa Rica.
Not only are we trying to increase knowledge and overall greenery on-site but we are devoted to single-use practices involving water bottles, plates and utensils. It is highly encouraged for Envision attendees to bring reusable items on-site. Envision will provide the dishwashing throughout the grounds to support this practice. We will have limited bamboo products on site for purchase. If buying them isn’t feasible, be sure to visit Community Carbon Trees at the Tree Center and learn how to make banana leaf, palm leaf, and bamboo items to use throughout the festival. Not only does it help the environment, but it is a useful skill to learn for future travels.
Community Carbon Trees has assisted Envision for over 5 years to support their cause. Here is a message from Founder and President, Jennifer Smith.
“If we are truly to create lasting solutions to the environmental problems facing the planet, we have to do MORE than plant trees for global warming. . . . Ideally, we also have to find ways to preserve local communities and cultures, while immediately rebuilding deforested soils, wildlife corridors and protecting watersheds and old growth forests. This work is especially important in countries like Costa Rica where there still exist intact stretches of primary jungle along the coast which, in turn, influence the oceans and marine life, together so vital to the overall stability of our global climate.”
Envision is a Leave No Trace event, and we have laid out suggestions for what you can do as an individual attendee to help us all leave the land better than we found it. We also provide opportunities to learn about environmental protection and waste management through workshops and other educational aspects of the event like processing compost, landfill, recycling and hazardous material so you know the proper ways to dispose!
