Kaleema’s music is a beautiful collision of the exotic and the organic. In it, you hear the soft textures and warm melodies of South American and African folk musics melding with the clean beats of modern electronic sounds.
Says Heidi Lewandowski a.k.a Kaleema, “I think my music is very influenced by my familial roots. All of my grandparents were immigrants, from Lebanon, Spain, Italy, and Poland; they were nomads who decided to travel to South America. I think there’s an unconscious search for roots in my musical search, like a strong love for ancestral music and folk music from the whole world.”
A classically trained violinist, Kaleema’s sonic creations unite technical formality with organic Afro-Colombian sounds and modern touches of pop, trap and hip-hop. There’s punchy beats, hypnotic chants, lush strings and a sense that the music is lifting you up as it hits your ears. It’s the sound of a soul untethered to national or musical boundaries.
“Nomada”, the debut LP from this Buenos Aires-born musical vagabond released by Tropical Twista Records features contributions from Chancha via Circuito, Sara Hebe and Lido Pimienta.
