Costa Rica is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the world. Its dense jungles contain some of the most sought-after and stunning sights for adventurers, artists, and photographers. While there is so much to be explored, we thought we’d narrow down some must-see locations around Uvita for you to charge up before or decompress after your Envision Festival experience.
Imagine diving off of a cascading waterfall into crystal clear waters in a beautiful canyon, encompassed by the rainforest. If you’re an adventurer seeking your next thrill, head over to Nauyaca Waterfalls. A 45-minute hike brings you to this stunning canyon, where you can jump from the 45 m (148 ft) top or relax in one of the smaller natural pools. It’s a family business on a private estate, so you can get there by horseback tour, hiking, or a scenic 4×4 tour. If you’re hiking just remember to wear proper shoes, and that you have plenty of water. The hike is 45 minutes but is well worth it as you encounter beautiful wildlife, and are met with cool, welcoming waters at the final destination.
Poza Azul is free of charge, but a little more out of the way. Part of the fun at Poza Asul is you can climb through the riverbed or along the side of the river to get to the waterfall itself. It’s a nice getaway from the falls in the area that are more frequented by tourists, but keep in mind that the water level can be quite low in February, so ask around before making the trip over!
The Uvita Waterfall
Also known as Cascada Verde, this gem is a favorite for locals and adventurers alike. The Uvita Waterfall is a lot more approachable than Nauyaca The waterfall itself is much smaller and has over time formed itself into a waterslide. The entrance fee is only $2, and access is very easy. You’re welcome to bring along a picnic and pets, as long as they’re well behaved. After all your adventuring, stop by the restaurant for a bite and a drink! There’s also a hostel very close to this location if you want to extend your trip and plan around this beautiful space!
This spot is very accessible, about 20 steps from the side of the road. There is a suspended boulder right in front of the waterfall, with no known story to explain. Bring your snorkel gear, because these crystal clear waters hold plenty of magic beneath the surface, you may even find yourself in a grotto behind the actual waterfall itself. This place is also very picnic-friendly, with easy-to-navigate terrain. Whether you’re on a solo adventure or with your family and little ones, Cascada El Pavon will be an experience for all.
Bonus: Bamboo Waterfall
This stunning scene is up the hill by Selva Armonia which is owned and operated by Envision Co-Founder Josh Wendel. As you walk through the bamboo forest, feel the bamboo tower over you, sheltering you from the sun and encapsulating you in a microcosm of Costa Rican magic. As you walk through the park, keep an ear out for water crashing, because you’ve likely found the Bamboo Waterfall! Getting there may be a bit strenuous so again, proper footwear and water are advised. But as soon as you get there, you’ll see that it was well worth the hike, with the stunning view that is the Bamboo Waterfall.
